EPS values safety & security

As we settle in to the school year, we want to provide you with information about how we design, practice and implement plans for a variety of scenarios.

On a monthly basis, our schools conduct an assortment of drills to cover a number of situations- fire, tornado, shelter in place, earthquake, lockdown and lockout drills-to ensure students and staff know how to appropriately respond to these situations.  Each school also conducts a yearly intensive table top/hands on drill with safety and security experts so staff can prepare for immediate responses. In the event of an actual incident, the district will use a full array of available communication tools – social media, web site(s), automated calls, recorded telephone messages and more – to keep you informed.

We have a number of designated security and safety staff at school buildings, including School Resource Officers that are Vancouver Police Department or Clark County Sheriff officers. They are assigned to one of four comprehensive high schools and also work with the middle and elementary schools in that high school attendance area. They are assisted by campus security officers – four at each comprehensive high school and two at each middle school – who work closely to promote safe conduct and choices while serving as advocates and mentors for the students.

We have hundreds of cameras in and around our schools, as well as on our buses, to protect students, staff and property. We have upgraded and added hundreds of card key locks to our school doors. While school is in session, our campuses are closed to visitors unless they enter, sign in and are provided a visitor badge at the main office.

Evergreen Public Schools has a comprehensive anti-harassment, intimidation and bullying policy-with phone, text or email reporting available 24/7 at https://egreen-wa.safeschoolsalert.com. Reports of unsafe behavior are quickly investigated and dealt with following adopted policies and procedures. If discipline is warranted, our schools use restorative practices where the focus is repairing the harm and strengthening the school community. Exclusionary forms of discipline are our last resort.

We have trained health and counseling professionals in our schools to ensure our students are mentally and physically capable to be as productive as possible. All of the district’s staff are available to help students navigate daily successes and struggles and to provide caring adult assistance as needed.

While there may be many unsettling events happening in our world today, our commitment at Evergreen Public Schools is to provide an environment for our students that is safe, secure and free of disruptions.
