Homework and Sunset's Extended Learning Opportunities

Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs) at home are valuable in helping students maximize their school experience. They reinforce classroom learning. ELOs are one vehicle for home-school communication. Parents can assist in making it a positive experience for children by establishing a consistent space/time for working, providing encouragement, and feedback. Sunset's policy is research based and carefully planned to strike a balance between academics, family life, and the needs of the child(ren).

Tips for Parents

  • Be familiar with Sunset ELO policy
  • Set aside a quiet, well-lit place for your child to work
  • Put aside a certain time for your child to do their work
  • Be involved in the ELO process, available to answer questions, offer advice, but don’t do the ELOs
  • Give practical help by taking your child to the library for research
  • Help by modeling reading and practicing math facts
  • Sign the ELO sheets and have your student return them to school
  • Be mindful of your family and child’s schedule, and plan accordingly, so ELOs can be completed on time
  • Talk to your child’s teacher

Extended Learning Opportunities are in addition to nightly math and reading!

  • Practicing math facts and reading are nightly expectations, depending on grade level:
  • Math Facts K– 5th Grade: 5 to 20 minutes (depending on child’s needs):Suggestions for practice: flashcards, dominoes, games (like cribbage), dice, websites, or math workbooks purchased by families.
  • Reading expectations K – 5th Grade:If your child is just learning to read and might not be able to read without assistance for an extended period of time, having an adult or older sibling read to them is acceptable.
  • Kindergarten and 1st grade - 10 to 20 minutes
  • 2nd and 3rd grade - 20 to 30 minutes
  • 4th and 5th grade - 30 to 40 minutes
